The Canticle of the Sun

Composed by St Francis in 1224 while recovering from an illness, the Canticle is a hymn of praise in thanks for creation.
From January to July 2014, I made seven large pieces of work from a selection of the text,
using a translation by Bill Barrett from the Umbrian text of the Assisi codex.
Each piece uses a piece of heavily textured paper which I made myself, and painted with acrylic and gouache paint.
The text was painted with a fine brush.
This work has been exhibited at Derby Cathedral Centre and, in collaboration with work by Derby artists Michael Cook and John Rattigan,
in Melbourne Church as part of the Melbourne Festival.
